Prestige entered English in the mid 17th century from French, and ultimately derives from the Latin plural noun praestigiae ‘conjuring tricks’. It took on its modern meaning in the 19th century by way of the sense ‘dazzling influence, glamour’, which at first had a derogatory implication.
