Taiwan donates NT$5 million to Japan for earthquake relief

台灣捐贈 500 萬新台幣協助日本地震救災與重建

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has donated NT$5 million (US$155,000) to Japan for help with reconstruction in the wake of the Kumamoto earthquake.

Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) handed a document representing the donation to Japan’s envoy to Taiwan, Katayama Kazuyuki, Thursday. The funds will serve to help rebuild homes and roads damaged by the July 28 quake, which left at least 38 people dead and more than 100 injured, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.

Lin said the president, vice president, and premier had each donated NT$200,000 from their own salaries. In addition, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., which operates a plant in Kumamoto, pledged NT$50 million for reconstruction.

For the first time, the ministry also tasked the International Cooperation and Development Fund to set up a disaster relief donation account. As of Thursday, it had received more than 12,000 donations valued at NT$150 million, the ministry said.

Katayama thanked Taiwan for helping out each time a disaster had hit Japan over the past 15 years.
