Taiwan population falls for 29th month in May
台灣人口在五月連續第29個月下降
| TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s population declined for a 29th consecutive month in May, falling to 23,252,641, the Ministry of the Interior said Tuesday.
The total population at the end of May was down 9,903 from April and 102,829 from a year earlier, per CNA. The ministry said the decline reflected natural decrease and migration. May recorded 6,832 births, the second-lowest monthly figure on record after February’s 6,523, per UDN. The crude birth rate stood at 3.46 per 1,000 people, with Taitung County posting the highest rate and Keelung the lowest. Deaths totaled 15,158 in May, down from a year earlier but still more than double the number of births. This resulted in a natural population decrease of 8,326 for the month. Migration also contributed to the decline. A total of 69,412 people moved in during May, while 70,989 moved out, producing a net outflow of 1,577 residents. Combining natural change and migration, Taiwan’s population fell by 9,903 in May. Marriages reached 11,559, a one-year high, while divorces totaled 4,143. As of the end of May, Taiwan’s population continued to age, with 20.43% aged 65 and above, 68.20% aged 15–64, and 11.37% aged 0–14, underscoring the shift into a super-aged society. |
