Taiwan, Europe boost 6G cooperation with 2 agreements

台歐簽署兩項協議,加強6G產業合作

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan and Europe have expanded 6G industrial cooperation through two new agreements signed during a major communications summit in Spain, CNA reported Tuesday.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs said it led a delegation of industry, university, and research representatives to Malaga, Spain, from June 2-5. The delegation attended the 2026 European Conference on Networks and Communications and 6G Summit, a major European event on communications systems and future network technology.

The ministry said the event drew more than 1,300 industry and research representatives from more than 40 countries. It said the summit was an important platform for global exchanges on 6G technology and future network development.

Taiwan held a “Taiwan Special Session” technical seminar during the event. The ministry and the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology witnessed the exchange of a memorandum of understanding between the European 6G Industry Association and the Taiwan 6G Industry Forum.

The Industrial Technology Research Institute also signed a cooperation agreement with the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research. The two sides will work on integrated sensing and communication, a 6G technology that lets networks transmit data and detect objects or movement.

The ministry said the agreements will help Taiwanese companies join European Union 6G research programs, test networks, and field trials. It said the cooperation will also help Taiwan’s industries connect earlier with global supply chains and technology development networks.

Taiwan has invested in key 6G technologies under the Cabinet’s next-generation communications technology development plan. These include 6G base station chip modules, integrated sensing and communication, non-terrestrial networks, smart network management, and 6G experimental networks.

The ministry said it launched a next-generation communications project under the A+ Industrial Innovative Research and Development Program in April. The project encourages companies to prepare technologies and products before international 6G standards are finalized.

According to the ministry, current plans show that global 6G standards are expected to be released in the first quarter of 2029. It said global 6G development is moving from research toward international testing, field use, and wider industry cooperation.

Taiwan has strengths in semiconductors, information and communications technology, and a complete communications supply chain, the ministry said. It said Taiwan will continue to support research, international cooperation, and industry innovation to help companies benefit from future 6G development.
