Elan Microelectronics expands AI imaging into drone applications

| TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Elan Microelectronics Corp. said Monday it is expanding its artificial intelligence imaging technologies into drone applications, building on years of development in machine vision and embedded processing systems.
The company said it has spent more than eight years developing AI image-processing technologies originally deployed in smart transportation systems, automotive surround-view applications, and visual recognition. These capabilities are now being adapted for unmanned aerial vehicles through partnerships with domestic industry players, according to CTEE. Elan highlighted its development of on-device image processing and decision-making systems designed for low-latency operations. It said the system supports real-time object recognition, intelligent tracking, and 360-degree obstacle avoidance. The company also noted that drone control systems must operate reliably in challenging outdoor conditions, including strong sunlight, rain, and glove use. Traditional touch interfaces may face limitations in visibility and usability under these conditions. To address these requirements, Elan is developing solutions featuring high-brightness displays, water resistance, glove-compatible operation, and secure authentication functions aimed at improving control stability. Chair Yeh I-hau (葉儀晧) pointed to growing demand in both defense and commercial drone markets. He said overseas markets offer greater opportunities, driven by rising demand for non-China supply chains and secure manufacturing. He added that companies capable of integrating AI vision, flight control, communications, and security modules would be better positioned to capture these markets. Elan’s push into drone-related applications is aimed at integrating these functions into a more complete system-level offering. |
