| TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Two-time Olympic skateboarding gold medalist Horigome Yuto drew large crowds on Saturday at the Red Bull Spot Check Taipei event outside Zhongshan Hall, highlighting the growing popularity of the sport, per CNA.
The 27-year-old Japanese skateboarder won gold in men’s street skateboarding at both the Tokyo and Paris Olympics. His comeback victory in Paris, sealed with a high-risk final trick, became one of the most memorable moments of the Games. Afterward, he said he “believed in even the 1% chance until the very end.” Horigome’s road to Paris was challenging. He struggled through the qualifying series and secured his Olympic berth by a narrow margin at the final qualifier in Budapest. In the Olympic final, he landed a trick he had never completed in competition on his last attempt. Widely regarded as one of the sport’s most recognizable figures, Horigome is known for his smooth, technical style. Speaking to local media, he said he had skated at multiple locations across Taiwan and found street skateboarding to be highly popular. The Red Bull-sponsored event also featured top international skateboarders, including Jamie Foy, Ryan Sheckler, and Australian rising star Chloe Covell. Despite intermittent rain, the demonstration delivered a series of technically difficult and crowd-pleasing performances. Horigome said he found Taiwan’s skateboarding community to be welcoming and close-knit. “Everyone felt that Taiwanese people were very friendly,” he said, per CNA. Earlier in the day, he visited the Taipei Extreme Sports Training Center, where he met emerging Taiwanese skateboarders. He said local skaters are highly talented, have developed their own styles, and appear to genuinely enjoy the sport. “That’s the most important thing about skateboarding,” he said. |
