| TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — President Lai Ching-te (賴清德) visited the National Center for AI Robotics Research Center in Tainan’s Shalun District on April 10, where he inspected AI-powered robotic dogs developed by Taipei-based firm Chelpis that feature post-quantum security capabilities.
According to a press release, the demonstration highlighted a growing area of Taiwan-US technology cooperation. Chelpis officials said the technology represents a step forward in combining advanced robotics with cybersecurity protections. Robotic dogs are increasingly being deployed in defense and disaster relief operations, where they can replace humans in high-risk environments. However, experts warn that interception or tampering of communications during missions could create serious security vulnerabilities. Chelpis said emerging quantum computing threats, including “harvest now, decrypt later” attacks, pose significant risks to data security. The company said adopting encryption resistant to quantum attacks is essential to ensure the reliability of unmanned systems. The firm said it has integrated post-quantum cryptography technology certified under the US National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Cryptographic Algorithm Validation Program into its US-based hardware architecture. It said the system achieves sub-millisecond encryption latency while maintaining real-time operational performance. AI robotic dogs can perform tasks such as facial recognition, autonomous navigation, and automated tracking while maintaining secure data transmission, per the press release. It added that integrated post-quantum encryption solutions remain rare in the market but are suitable for real-world deployment. Chelpis said more than 51% of its technology is developed in Taiwan, combining domestically developed software with US hardware platforms. It said this approach is intended to strengthen system integration, reduce supply chain risks, and mitigate potential cybersecurity threats such as hardware backdoors. The company said it aims to manufacture, assemble, and export the robotic systems from Taiwan while expanding into global government and critical infrastructure markets in collaboration with US partners. Headquartered in Taipei, Chelpis specializes in post-quantum cryptography and established Asia’s first Quantum Secure Migration Center in 2023. It has collaborated with organizations including MITRE and the Linux Foundation and says it holds certifications tied to standards from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology. Chelpis said it is prioritizing practical applications that provide quantum security deployment assessments for governments, defense agencies, and financial institutions, aiming to support cybersecurity resilience during the transition to the quantum era. |
