Taiwan tops Singapore’s trading partners last year
台南國際蘭展預計將帶來12億新台幣的收入
| TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Deputy Minister of Agriculture Hu Jong-i (胡忠一) said the Taiwan International Orchid Show in Tainan is expected to draw over 420,000 visitors and generate more than NT$1.2 billion (US$40 million).
The event, featuring exhibitors from 30 countries, will run from Feb. 27 to March 16 at the Floral Industry Innovation Center, per CNA. Themed “Blooming Taiwan,” it will showcase award-winning orchids, with some displays incorporating 3D technology to create an immersive experience. Tainan City Government said the event will host business matching sessions and provide export quarantine services to facilitate international purchases. It will also feature flower markets and orchid competitions. The ministry has managed the center since 2022, promoting the use of AI technology in cultivation. It has also collaborated with the Taiwan Agricultural Research Institute to breed new varieties. Hu said Taiwan’s annual flower industry output is valued at about NT$18 billion. Of that total, orchids account for NT$6.8 billion per year, including NT$800 million from domestic sales. The US is the largest export market for Taiwanese orchids, accounting for about 30% of total exports, followed by Japan and Vietnam. The ministry said that it will support the sector in diversifying exports to Canada and Australia this year. Hu noted that local orchid growers have been affected by US tariffs and strong competition from China. In response, they have continued to upgrade breeding and production technologies and begun offering customized orchid varieties. Houbi District in Tainan is a key production area for moth orchids, accounting for one-third of the nation’s cultivation area. The district features numerous orchid greenhouses and orchid variety developers. Taiwan Sugar Corp. also operates an orchid farm in the district, producing blooms for export. The city government added that during the event, it will showcase orchid displays, the city’s agricultural products, and lantern exhibitions at Jingliao Old Street in the district. |
