| TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Based on data compiled by the Numbeo index, the cost of living in Taipei has surpassed that of Tokyo for 2026.
With an index of 54.7, Taipei ranked 15th most expensive city in Asia this year, coming in two spots ahead of Tokyo, which had an index rating of 54.2, per Numbeo. New Taipei ranked 19th in Asia with an index of 51.1, two spots below Tokyo. Among cities in East Asia, Hong Kong (75.2) and Seoul (68.2) rank highest after Singapore. The only other Taiwanese city included on the index was Taichung with an index of 47.6. It ranked only slightly higher than the East Asian cities of Osaka (43.5), Phuket (43.7), and Bangkok (41.4). Other East Asian cities that ranked in the top 50 spots of the Asia index were Makati (41.2), Shanghai (38.8), Beijing (38), Phnom Penh (37.9), Pattaya (37.9), Kuala Lumpur (37.4), and Bali (37.3). |
