Kenting launches sika deer capture training
墾丁啟動梅花鹿捕捉訓練
| TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Kenting National Park Headquarters will launch its first sika deer capture training program on Thursday to help manage the park’s growing deer population, which has surpassed the area’s environmental carrying capacity.
Recent surveys estimate that more than 3,600 sika deer now inhabit the park and surrounding areas. Deputy Director Tseng Tien-ting (曾添丁) said that the population boom has led to crop damage and traffic accidents, according to CNA. The program will focus on live capture and relocation to the Sheding restoration area, which currently covers roughly 1.2 million square meters and hosts about 20 deer. Officials plan to introduce an additional 50 deer this year. The experimental training course will enroll participants recommended by township offices in deer-affected areas such as Manzhou and Hengchun. Those who complete the program will be certified to perform live captures using lasso techniques. Training will include field capture guidelines, practical exercises, deer restraint methods, and post-capture handling and transport. Tseng emphasized that all activities will follow strict protocols to minimize injuries and fatalities. |
