Taoyuan to start construction on nearly 1,000-unit social housing in 2027
桃園市將於2027年動工興建近1,000戶社會住宅。
| TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taoyuan City Government will build a nearly 1,000-unit social housing complex in the Taoyuan Aerotropolis in Dayuan District in the second half of 2027, making it the city’s largest social housing project to date.
The Taoyuan Housing Development Office said the project is scheduled to open in 2031, per CNA. It will be located near the Taoyuan Airport MRT and the city’s Green Line metro. The building, with a construction cost of about NT$8.98 billion (US$290 million), will have two underground and nine aboveground floors with one- to three-bedroom units. Public facilities will include a childcare center and a day care space for people with disabilities. As of October, Taoyuan had 14 social housing complexes housing 4,374 households, with another 1,631 units under construction. The total number of units is expected to surpass 10,000 by 2030, a goal aimed at helping young people reduce rental expenses before buying homes. Taoyuan has a population of about 2.35 million, with residents aged 15–64 making up 70.67% of the total, followed by those 65 and older at 15.88%, and those 14 and under at 13.45%. The city has seen annual population growth, mainly driven by Taoyuan Airport MRT connections to Greater Taipei and the introduction of the TPass monthly transit card. The Taoyuan Aerotropolis, which began construction in 2021 and covers about 4,564 hectares, is an urban development project near Taoyuan International Airport. The project aims to create a zone integrating industrial, commercial, residential, and recreational functions. The project also encompasses the airport’s expansion, construction of a third terminal, and extensions of surrounding transport infrastructure, including highways and MRT lines. It will integrate smart-city elements such as intelligent transit systems, energy-efficient management, and digital home services. However, the project has sparked debate over land seizures, resident displacement, and its expected economic impact. The airport’s third runway, being built between three ponds and CPC Corp.’s oil depot, measures 4,000 meters long and 60 meters wide and has raised safety concerns. |
