| TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Foxconn said its board approved up to NT$42 billion (US$13 billion) to buy AI equipment and build a supercomputer center by 2026, CNA reported Monday.
The company said the first phase will include 10,000 Nvidia GH200 modules. It plans to complete the first stage by mid-2026, with a second stage to follow later, according to the Economic Daily News. Industry experts said this could be Taiwan’s biggest project yet under Nvidia’s cloud partner program. They added that other tech players, such as TSMC and the National Science and Technology Council, may utilize Foxconn’s supercomputer center, per CNA. Foxconn Chair Young Liu (劉揚偉) said the company is mapping its next five-year plan. He said AI applications are just starting and that building a 1-gigawatt data center could cost at least US$50 billion. Foxconn also said in October that it is teaming up with Nvidia to roll out an 800-volt power setup in Kaohsiung. The plan will form part of a new AI factory base to showcase servers, data centers, and renewable energy systems. In August, Foxconn said its capital spending in the first half of 2024 reached NT$79.8 billion, up more than 25% year-on-year. The company aims to keep annual spending growth above 20%. According to Economic Daily News, the Hon Hai Research Institute said it is building its own AI foundation models to drive smart manufacturing, electric vehicles, and smart city platforms. The team also launched its first Mandarin large language model earlier this year to boost data analysis work. Nvidia is providing Foxconn with technical advice and access to its Taipei-1 supercomputer to help train AI models. |
