| TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan tech companies expanding their US operations drew more than 1,000 overseas students to a Los Angeles career fair, CNA reported Monday.
Companies such as Foxconn, Quanta, Wistron, and Wiwynn sent operations managers to interview candidates. One manager said during a speech they hoped to meet with every applicant. Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in North America Director Eugenia Henry (白越珠) said the expansion of Taiwanese factories in the US is a long-term trend that raises Taiwan’s visibility internationally. Ronny Chiang (蔣序龍), chair of the North America Talent and Industry Connect Committee, said Foxconn and Quanta together now employ over 10,000 people in the US. He added that AI server demand will create labor shortages across different fields. Evelyn, a recent graduate of the University of California, Irvine, said American firms are reluctant to hire international graduates because of strict US visa policies. She said many overseas students worry they cannot work in the US. Fiona, who will soon graduate from the University of Southern California, said American firms tend to be conservative under current policies. She said Taiwan companies are friendlier toward overseas students and more willing to offer opportunities. Immigration lawyer Chen Chi-keng (陳啟耕) said new H-1B visa rules will not affect students already in the US. He added that alternative routes like L-1 and E-2 visas offer faster approvals and high acceptance rates, per Business Weekly. Chen cited US data showing E-2 visas for Taiwanese citizens jumped from 400 to over 4,000 in the past decade. He said expanding Taiwanese investment will keep creating paths for students to build careers in the US. |
