Well-known Taiwanese brand recalls ‘moldy’ mooncakes
台灣知名品牌召回「發黴」月餅
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese pastry brand Sunny Hills (微熱山丘) said Saturday it is recalling mooncakes after customers reported that gift boxes for the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival contained moldy products.
The company said it quickly investigated and found defective sealing on a new packaging line. It apologized to affected customers and is offering full refunds; customers with advance orders may cancel them, per CNA. Sunny Hills said the issue was isolated. However, with insufficient time to meet advance shipping commitments before the holiday, the company decided to halt all production of this year’s mooncakes. Sunny Hills Chair Hsu Ming-ren (許銘仁) issued a signed statement on the company’s website announcing the decision. In 2019, the company debuted its creamy custard pineapple mooncake, selling more than 40,000 boxes during the festival. In 2020, sales reached 160,000 boxes, generating NT$100 million (US$3.3 million), per Business Today. Mooncakes are a key seasonal product for Taiwan’s baking industry, as many people buy them as gifts for friends and family. Coming out of the COVID slump, the company urged all employees to help with sales to boost volumes. The company said on its website, “We can only honestly acknowledge the problem, bravely face it, and resolve it. We must live up to the expectations of our long-standing customer base.” |
