30,000-person sports facility set for Shui-Nan Economic and Trade Park
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taichung Mayor Liu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) said Wednesday the 30,000-person Taichung Dome will be located at the Shui-Nan Economic and Trade Park, per UDN. Liu said the multi-functional venue will accommodate large-scale sporting events like baseball, concerts, and other artistic performances. The new dome could be completed as early as 2030, according to Liu. She made the comments to local media before a regularly scheduled question-and-answer session at Taichung City Council. Liu said that one private investment group had already submitted a build-operate-transfer, BOT, proposal. Liu said the Shui-Nan Economic and Trade Park is the most appropriate location for the dome due to its flat topography, ample size covering 16.3 hectares, and two nearby MRT lines. Furthermore, a high-speed railway station will be built adjacent to the area in the future, and the site is only a 30-minute drive to Taichung International Airport. Being located near important transportation nodes will increase the commercial investment potential of the new dome. Taichung Sports Bureau Director Yu Chih-hsiang (游志祥) said the city government will announce the project for three months and solicit bids, and conduct reviews to sign a contract next year. According to the announcement, the project will include ancillary commercial facilities such as shopping malls. Yu said the construction cost is expected to exceed NT$40 billion (US$1.34 billion) and will create 50,000 jobs. The private investors who proposed the BOT case are a joint venture that has experience operating baseball teams and hosting international sports events in the US and Japan. |
