Narwhal sub must meet all safety standards before sea trials
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s domestic submarine is in the final preparation stage before sea trials, Vice Admiral Chiu Chun-jung (邱俊榮), the Navy chief of staff, said at a press conference on Wednesday. Once all safety conditions are met, sea testing for the Narwhal will be arranged, Chiu said, per CNA. Currently, technical consultants, Navy personnel, and shipyard inspectors are conducting seaworthiness assessments to determine an appropriate time for the trials, he said. The chief of staff emphasized that the goal of delivering the submarine to the Navy in November remains unchanged. The submarine was originally scheduled to undergo sea trials from April through Sept. 30, but was delayed due to prolonged tests and technical adjustments. The Navy’s approach is to respond proactively, and although plans may change if sea trials are pushed back further, Chiu said it aims to finish by September. Submarines represent a critical military capability, Chiu said last month. Their development involves many teams, complex systems, and testing schedules for new equipment. |
