Companies utilize 5G and fiber networks to automate container operations
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Evergreen Marine Corp. partnered with Chunghwa Telecom to implement smart container operations at Kaohsiung Port's seventh container terminal, CNA reported on Wednesday. According to Evergreen Marine, its operators previously worked high up in bridge cranes and manually verified container numbers. The company said the partnership with Chunghwa Telecom will automate container operations and speed up loading and unloading. Evergreen Marine said it integrated Chunghwa Telecom’s 5G and fiber-optic networks at its operations hub at Kaohsiung Port. The enhanced connectivity enables real-time video transmission for remotely operated bridge cranes, allowing for greater precision in container handling and unloading. The shipping company added that it set up computing infrastructure at its data center within the Kaohsiung container terminal to strengthen cybersecurity. It said these efforts are part of its digital transformation initiatives to reduce labor costs and move toward unmanned operations. Kaohsiung Port's seventh container terminal spans 149 hectares and can berth four ultra-large container ships simultaneously. Chunghwa Telecom said the terminal’s vast area and the high number of moving trucks pose challenges for establishing a stable Wi-Fi network there. Most containers are made of metal, which can interfere with wireless signals, the telecom company said. To address this, it installed seven 5G base stations across the container terminal to provide full-site communication coverage. Digital Affairs Minister Huang Yen-nun (黃彥男) visited Evergreen Marine’s facilities at Kaohsiung Port on Wednesday. He praised the company’s efforts toward automating container operations and noted that this is Taiwan’s first smart container terminal to adopt 5G technology. Huang added that the ministry will accelerate the integration of 5G, AI, and the Internet of Things to help upgrade operations of various sectors in Taiwan. |
