Spectators ignite firecrackers toward passing palanquins as display of devotion
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Yanshui Beehive Fireworks Festival in Tainan runs Tuesday and Wednesday. The Tourism Administration said the festival is a well-known Lantern Festival folk activity and attracts thousands of tourists annually, CNA reported. The nearly 150-year-old beehive fireworks event became a top-10 Asian celebration. Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) launched the festival on Tuesday morning by lighting firecrackers at Yanshui Wu Temple. He also toured the main streets of Yanshui District on a parade float. The festival's palanquin procession will follow five routes through Yanshui District. Spectators will ignite firecrackers toward the passing palanquins as a traditional display of devotion. Some spectators will also join the palanquin procession, embracing the thrill of being hit by firecrackers. This year's event features over 200 "firecracker towers," with the main tower themed for the Year of the Snake. The highlight will be Wednesday evening, when beehive fireworks are launched at the Yanshui Junior High School sports field. Huang added that the festival carries historical and religious significance. The city government pledged to preserve the tradition, ensuring visitors can experience the Lunar New Year atmosphere. Last year's event drew approximately 600,000 visitors for the Lantern Festival. Organizers set up four large firecracker towers and launched nearly 2 million firecrackers throughout the celebration. |
