Taiwanese doctor warns chronic vitamin B12 deficiency can cause hives
台灣醫師警告長期缺乏維生素B12會引發蕁麻疹
People recommended to consume meat and dairy for adequate vitamin B12
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwanese Doctor Yen Tso-hua (顏佐樺) said Monday (Dec. 2) that a prolonged vitamin B12 deficiency can trigger hives. Hives, or urticaria, are itchy, raised welts on the skin, typically caused by allergic reactions to environmental factors or certain foods, according to Healthline. They can often be relieved with allergy medications. Yen, a family doctor at Liansin Clinic in Taipei, told CNA that the recommended daily intake of vitamin B12 for people over 14 years old is 2.4 micrograms. A long-term deficiency can disrupt metabolism, cause hives, and severely affect memory, nerve function, and heart health. Foods rich in vitamin B12 include unprocessed meat, eggs, and dairy products, per Healthline. However, individuals with refined diets or those following vegetarian lifestyles may need supplements. Yen added that a high-stress lifestyle can reduce B vitamin absorption and noted that 25.8% of the nation’s population suffers from a B vitamin deficiency. |
