Hong Kong could lose hub status, industry sources say
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport saw 3.94 million passengers in the first seven months of this year, a 32.3% increase compared to the same period in 2019, CNA reported Sunday (Dec. 1). According to Taoyuan Airport statistics, transit passengers mainly came from North America and Southeast Asia. These routes accounted for 3.04 million passengers, 77% of transit passengers. “Hong Kong, Tokyo, Seoul, and Singapore have been well-known transit cities in East Asia,” a senior aviation industry executive said. “Taiwan will become a major transit hub in East Asia, with a promising outlook for the transit market.” There are more than 160 weekly flights from Taoyuan Airport to North America, the source added. “The high number of flights and coverage of key cities allow for extensive transit passenger traffic distribution.” In contrast, Hong Kong has been affected by political and economic factors post-COVID pandemic, with passenger volume in 2023 nearly halved. Senior officials at International Air Transport Association (IATA) have questioned whether the city might lose its hub status. |
