5 engineers used designer bots to buy concert tickets
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Police in a crackdown on ticket scalping detained five engineers who used advanced technology to buy tickets for Jay Chou (周杰倫) concerts to resell them, reports said Saturday (Oct. 26). Taiwan’s “King of Mandopop” will be the first singer to give a full concert at the Taipei Dome, in early December. Amid massive interest from the public, reports emerged of ticket scalpers making a killing by reselling tickets at hugely inflated prices. Police in Taichung detained five engineers who bought 48 tickets and resold them at prices up to NT$15,000 (US$467) a piece, achieving illegal income totaling NT$330,000, per CNA. They operated from an internet cafe to evade detection, according to police. The group used adapted bot programs to buy tickets on different websites. However, a special law enforcement task force applied big data to observe and track suspicious online activities. The group also bought tickets for other concerts besides Chou. The Taichung District Prosecutors Office is investigating the five suspects for breaking the Development of the Cultural and Creative Industries Act. |
