Taiwan Pride parade attracts 180,000 marchers to promote inclusion
台灣驕傲遊行吸引18萬名遊行者推廣包容
Social action groups, political parties, corporations lent their support
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – An estimated 180,000 people wound their way through the streets of Taipei Saturday (Oct. 26) for Taiwan Pride, the largest LGBTQ+ rights parade in Asia. Coming five years after Taiwan legalized same-sex marriage, the event attracted families and foreign visitors as well as delegations from political parties, social movements, and corporations. Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) and Vice Premier Cheng Li-chun (鄭麗君) led the way for the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) group. The 22nd edition of the parade was conducted under the motto “Embrace Inclusion,” per CNA. The gay rights supporters marched along two routes away from Taipei City Hall, before circling back to the original venue, where more than 100 booths at a “Rainbow Market” awaited them. Marchers dressed up in disguises, some of them related to Halloween, carried rainbow flags, pets, or even an effigy of the deity Matsu. Organizer the Taiwan Rainbow Civil Action Association said this year’s aim was to foster more tolerance and inclusion in Taiwan society. While same-sex marriage had been approved in May 2019, there was still a need for more dialogue to improve understanding. |
