Single Tainan Irwin mango priced at record NT$874 in Japan
台南愛文芒果創紀錄在日本單顆售價新台幣874元
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A single Irwin mango from Tainan was listed at a record ¥4,320, or NT$874 (US$30), at a Queen’s Isetan supermarket in Tokyo’s Shinjuku City, marking the highest price ever for the variety in Japan.
Renowned for their vibrant red skin, plump shape, and sweet tropical aroma, the mangos are now available at 22 Queen’s Isetan locations across Japan. The expansion follows positive consumer response since the fruit was first introduced in three of the chain’s stores last year, according to CNA and 3 Door Hotel. Tainan’s Irwin mangos originate in Yujing District, where local farmer Cheng Han-chih (鄭罕池) was the first to successfully cultivate the variety in Taiwan. The region’s basin-like topography, well-drained sandy soil, abundant sunshine, and average annual temperature of 23.7 C create ideal growing conditions. Yujing’s peak mango season runs from early June through July. In Taiwan, the estimated retail price of Irwin mangos this week is about NT$201 per kilogram, according to In Season. Taiwan’s representative to Japan, Li Yi-yang (李逸洋), said the mango’s entry into a high-end Japanese retailer boosts the image of Taiwanese agricultural products. He added that Taiwan and Japan maintain close agricultural trade ties. Last year, Taiwan exported NT$978 million worth of fresh fruit to Japan, making up 40.7% of its total fruit exports. Japan is Taiwan’s largest overseas market for fresh fruit. |
