Although the earliest use of fulsome was ‘abundant’, this meaning was replaced by the negative sense ‘excessively complimentary’, and is now generally held to be incorrect. It is often heard in phrases such as fulsome praise, however, where the speaker merely means that the praise is abundant rather than excessively flattering.
