教育,通常有廣義和狹義兩種概念。廣義的教育泛指一切傳播和學習人類文明成果,即各種知識、技能和社會生活經驗,以促進個體社會化和社會個性化的社會實踐活動,產生於人類社會初始階段;狹義的教育專指學校教育,即制度化教育。廣義的教育則包含社會待人處事的方方面面,例如家教、禮儀等文明與社會的教育。
在學校教育中,教師直接向學生教授一系列課程,包括閱讀、寫作、數學、科學、歷史等。與之相對地,職業教育中只教授單一的職業技能。除此之外,人們還可以從其他渠道獲得非正式的教育,如博物館、圖書館、網際網路,以及生活中的經驗。其他一些新的教育方式也逐漸出現。
教育者按照法律法規和行業規範,根據學校條件和職稱,有目的有計劃有組織地對受教育者的心智發展進行教化培育,以現有的經驗、學識授人,為其解釋各種現象、問題或行為,以提高實踐能力,其根本是以人的一種相對成熟或理性的思維來認知對待事物。人在其中,慢慢對一種事物由感官觸摸到認知理解的狀態,並形成一種相對完善或理性的自我意識思維。但同時人有著自我意識思維,又有著其自我的感官維度,所以任何教育性的意識思維都未必能夠絕對正確,而應該感性式地理解其思維的方向,只要他不偏離事物的內在。
教育又是一種思維的傳授,而人因為其自身的意識形態,又有著另樣的思維走勢,所以,教育應當以客觀、公正的意識思維教化於人,如此,人的思維才不至於過於偏差,並因思維的豐富而逐漸成熟、理性,並由此走向理性的自我和擁有正確的思維認知,這是教育的根本所在。教育也是一種教書育人的過程,可將一種客觀的理解教予他人,而後在自己的生活經驗中得以重塑價值觀。教育,也是一種提高人的綜合素質的實踐活動。
如今,受教育權已被普遍認為是一項基本人權,1952年發表的《歐洲人權公約》和聯合國1966年發表的《經濟、社會及文化權利國際公約》均承認此項權利。
